Chris spoke with me about enlarged prints for Box 6. It would be most convenient for him if I prepared for the next photo shot (uncovered the bone from the earth) this morning so he could develop the film this afternoon and print tomorrow morning. The n Icould work directly with an enlarged photo while removing the bone.

Box 4 Bone C

  1. Cleaned once more with alcohol
  2. Brushed on PVA emulsion - let dry.
  3. Bagged with enclosed label the very tiny fragments

Box 1 Bone 2 femur: attempted to glue the 2 parts together which had broken during the PVA treatment. It is very difficult because of the angle of warpage. The job was successful.

Box 6: Began work on this box and removed the following:

  1. Loose in bottom of the box: (a) loose fragments of bone; (b) pottery, stones, leon, a shell; (c) one tooth - incisor, single root intact except for tip which is broken.
  2. Within a small box - small box 1, found several bone fragments (11)
  3. Within a second small box (small box 2) found 5 teeth and 2 small bone fragments. The teeth are in fragile condition - the enamel is ready to flake off.
  4. Large lump of earth - part of which contains a bone and this section has separated from the larger lump since the photo in situ was taken of this box.

Chris photographed the bone in the earth.

List of photographs.

Began to carefully remove earth from around the edge of the bone. There are small rootlets and the earth is that "layered sheet-like" type. Soaked earth with water (remains from water-alcohol solution which is no longer 50:50) to loosen it using a nasal spray bottle.

Part of a bone (a second bone?) is shattered in many tiny pieces, which is held together by sitting on top of earth.

It appears that one bone may be crossing or lying over another bone.

Photographed the two bones.

Box 6:

  1. Cleaned with water-alcohol solution (50:50). The misc. loose fragments that were loose in the box. (a) Brushed off dirt with a stiff brush, (b) water-alcohol solution (50:50) with a cotton swab, wiped with cotton and use of pin vice when necessary to scrape softly.
  2. Glued 2 pieces
  3. Bagged tiny fragments from the 2 bones (sitting in the earth still) - bones 1 and 2 from this paint - label enclosed.
  4. Placed man-bone items in a plastic cup - label on outside as well as one inside.

Box 4 Bone C: glued on piece which had been separated (due to dirt) - let dry.
