Box 1 Pelvis: Removed the gauze-towel covering. The layers pealed off easily and the bone appears to be hard.

Procedure for removal:

  1. Brush on alcohol
  2. Wait about 5-10 minutes
  3. Peal back carefully layer by layer with tweezers, dental pick, etc.

Lucy - Box 1 Bone 2: worked on joining pieces.

Box 7 Pelvis: Removed gauze-towel layers. Photographed (Chris) the unveiling in various stages.

Note: the paper layers often stick together as one unit, but peal nicely away from the gauze.

Page 40 scan

The gauze did not remove easily and it was thus necessary to apply an additional brushing of alcohol.

Pealed off nicely after five minutes except for one section which needed more alcohol brushed onto it.

Two areas show separation where apparently it was not consolidated into a solid unit - at a narrow break in the bone.

The piece seems to have consolidated nicely and the treatment appears at this stage to have been successful.

Removed some dirt around the bone while still soft from the alcohol. The earth, however, dried rather rapidly and it was difficult to differentiate between bone and earth.

Brushed the bone once again with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.) for additional consolidation strength.

Skulls

  1. Photographed in situ by Chris. Overall view and details.
  2. Labelled on tomb plan: Skull X and Skull Y.
  3. Removed loose pieces from the earth to be cleaned by the alcohol-water solution method.

Page 41 scan

Note:

  1. Found in the earth: many roots and rootlets, very tiny shell fragments, a very tiny white coiled shell (snail?)
  2. Re: Bone. Many small broken pieces. The larger pieces of bone appear to be hard and in good condition, e.g. parental pieces.

4. Sifted by hand through the deslogged earth for small bone fragments.

5. Placed aside chunks of earth containing bone - inwhat looks likefragile condition

Thelma - Box 6 - loose fragments. Piecing and looking for possible joins.

Assisted by Thelma: Cleaned larger pieces of Skull X with water-alcohol solution (50:50).

Discussed work plan for next day with E. Nielsen.
