Box 7: Pelvis

Continued to clean dirt away from the bone. The parts of the bone which were painted with the PVA emulsion are in a good hard condition.

Treated a delicate section with more PVA emulsion.

Lucy -

Box 1 Bone 2: joined a piece.

Box 1 Pelvis: painted the "larger" fragile pieces with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.). The dirt (which is basically holding the bone together) has the tendency to dry out and

hopefully the extra coat of PVA will aid in consolidating the piece.

In the process, unfortunately, the dirt crumbled repainting two pieces.

Photographed - Pelvis (Box 7). Gen. shot, detail, and with some gauze in place.

Box 7 Pelvis: PVA gauze treatment on opposite side.

  1. Overlapping layers of gauze to cover the piece.
  2. Brush on the PVA (AYA F 25% solution) with a brush - not thick laying of solution - molding the gauze to the bone by lightly pressing it with the flat end of a dental tool.
  3. Put on 3 layers of paper towel and brushed each with PVA.
  4. Let dry. Already the piece is becoming "paper mache" or plaster-like in texture!

Lucy gave the same gauze-PVA treatment to Box 1 Pelvis.

Box 7

Excavating the remaining earth in the box, found parts of giners, very fragile and fragmentary: many roots in this section of earth and

the bone material is badly deteriorated.

Consolidated 3 finger parts with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.). The remaining tiny fragments (not cleaned) were bagged with enclosed label.

Believe finger parts are: phalange - distal row.
