Piecing together (looking for) fragments from Box 6.

Sorted through earth looking for fragments, etc., from Box 6. None found.

Skull X

Goal: To hold the shape.

  1. Brushed down carefully, removing dirt from surface of washed bone.
  2. Consolidated with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.) - brushed on carefully with a soft brush.

Note:

  1. The skull has rolled over and is lying on its right side. Parts of the bone have separated, probably rolling down and are among the loose fragments removed yesterday.
  2. The lower jaw is perhaps lying in the original position (teeth up) and there are nine teeth visibeal, as well as one tooth which separated.
  3. The mandible is underneath except for a tiny section (about 1.5 cm)
  4. Three (or four) upper teeth (with roots) can be seen and part of the left side of the maxillary.
  5. Seen in situ: Right parental and parts of left parental occepital. Some temperoal (Left).
  6. Many rootlets and large roots have grown through the skull.
  7. Part of a long bone shaft is visible (near the maxillary in HS turned position) suggests proximal end of a humerus.

Skull Y

In much poorer condition. Appearance suggests that the upper part of the skull (facial, maxillcery) collapsed onto the mandible, perhaps in a slightly turned (to left) manner.

With a small soft brush, lightly brushed dirt away from the teeth and the "less fragile" areas of the skull. Left alone the sections which gave the impression they might fail on move.

Visible features in situ:

  1. ? squamoos portion of temporal/parental
  2. Sections of mandible (one about 4 cm)
  3. 8 lower teeth - right side. ? 3 molars, 2 PM, C, I2, I1.
  4. 5 upper teeth. ? 2 I1, 2 I2, C (H).

Photographed (Chris):

  1. Skull X - in situ, closeup of long bone near maxillary.
  2. Skull Y - closeup of teeth.

Skull ? Y

The large chunk of earth (which was

turned over yesterday containing several large bone fragments still in their skull-shape though separately was brushed gently to remove loose dirt and then consolidated with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.). Left to dry.

  • Tomb 5, Box 3 Bone 2
  • Tibia shaft, incomplete
  • Maximum preserved length: 150 mm

The bone was lying on a layer of flatstones and is incomplete. When uncovered, there were many small fragments (cracks) which were supported by the earth filling the interior of the bone shaft.

The reconstructed bone shaft is in good condition - solid - although there are some gaps due to the action of rootlets and earth. The only identifiable feature is the anterior crest. Ten loose fragments (bagged with enclosed label) remain.

Summary of treatment:

  1. Cleaned with alcohol-water solution (50:50)
  2. Individual pieces were treated with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.)
  3. Glued with Glister.
