A.M.

The first cut taken in meters N1-2W18 were completed. In N1W18 there was another area of compacted stones close to the surface. The soil around them was very loose, unlike the roadbed in N3W16, N2W15-14, and they came out with the first pick. Closing depths for the topsoil in these two meters are as follows: NW = 16 cm b.d., SW = 8 cm, NE = 20 cm, SE = 15 cm.

The light olive brown soil directly beneath the dark grayish brown soil will be called Locus 18. A 20 cm pick cut was completed throughout the entire trench. Galestra was touched upon towards the south in meters N1-2W18. The soil towards the north is darker and more clay-like.

9 pieces of pottery were found: 8 impasto fragments and one coarseware fragment. 4 pieces of tile were also found, very worn and small, approximately 2 cm.

P.M.

Another cut, approximately 20 cm, was taken in meters N3-5W18. This cut was not continued in N1-2W18 because of the appearance of galestra. It was sterile soil. A third cut was taken in N4-5W18, approximately 20 cm. This cut wasn't taken in N3W18 because of the presence of galestra. In N4W18galestra was also hit upon, but in the north half of N5W18 the soil is still a light a light olive brown but it also consists of chunks of limestone and the yellowish rock that is indicative of soil that lies directly above galestra.

No archaeological material was found in the afternoon. The closing depths are as follows:

N4/W18:  NW = 44 cm b.d.; NE = 44 cm b.d.; SW = 52 cm b.d.; SE = 50 cm b.d.

N3/W18: NW = 41 cm b.d.; NE = 41 cm b.d.; SW = 43 cm b.d.; SE = 46 cm b.d.

N1-2/W18: NW = 34 cm b.d.; NE = 30 cm b.d.; SW = 23 cm b.d.; SE = 25 cm b.d.

No indication of any type of feature was noticed in the stratigraphic profile. So it is possible that the feature in the west baulk of meters N4-3W14 is not a type of channel that carried water to the well cistern.

The baulk in the new trench meters N1-5W18 will be drawn tomorrow to show the absence of a feature. Photos were taken of the trench baulks today ( ).
