The decision was made to open a 3x2 meter trench in N3-5/W15-14, first excavating the features in meters N3-5/W15. The profile of the feature is seen in the west baulks of meters N4-3/W14; which is now not believed to be a channel that transported water to the well cistern. Meters N3-5/W15 will be excavated with trowels and hand picks.
The main objective is to define the extent of the feature horizontally and, once it is defined, excavate it as a separate locus. The topsoil layer in N3-5W15 will be locus 19. The opening depths for Locus 19 are as follows: NW = 9 cm b.d., SW = 19, NE = 10, SE = 16. At the ending depths for Locus 19, the topsoil, the feature, which is a darker lens of soil with a concentration of carbon flecks, rocks and pottery and tile fragments, the outline of the feature
can be detected towards the south because the yellowish soil (pre-galestra and galestra) is surrounding it. However, on the north end of the trench, the outline of the feature is not as easily detected because we are still in the topsoil. (Topsoil indicates the dark grayish brown and light olive brown soils above galestra.)
The closing depths for locus 19, the dark grayish brown soil, are as follows: NW = 17 cm b.d., NE = 18, SW = 23, SE = 20. This is approximately how deep the trench was taken today.
13 tile fragments were found (1-4 cm), 22 pieces of impasto, 22 pieces of coarseware, and 8 pieces of bone. Also a block of terracotta in a rectangular shape, (its use is unknown), and a piece of plaster. (*locus 19 actually consists of only \xbd of meter N5W15, the south \xbd).
