A 5x1 meter trench was opened 2 meters west of the west baulk of trench CA42. This new trench will also be considered part of CA42. The grid co-ordinates for the new trench are N1-5 W18. (See for a plan indicating the location of the new trench.) The reason for doing this is to see whether or not the dark grayish brown soil lens( in the west baulk outlining the feature(well)of meters N3-5W14) continues on outside the trench area. This lens indicates some type of feature. It may possibly be a channel that would have carried water to the well/cistern. (See for a detailed drawing of the west baulk of meters N3-5 W14 showing the lens of darker soil.)

Opening depths, using the same datum point set 10 cm above ground surface and will be used for all measurements, are as follows: NW = +3 cm, SW = 8 cm b.d.,

NE = 3 cm b.d., SE = 9 cm b.d., middle = 8 cm b.d.

These opening depths were taken in meters N3-5/W18. The opening depths for meters N1-2/W18 are as follows: NW = 11 cm b.d, SW = 5, NE = 16, SE = 4 and middle = 12.

The first cut into this new trench, which will be called locus 17, consisted of a humus layer, grassy, roots and a very dark grayish brown soil (10yr 3/2), a pproximately 1-2 cm thick. Directly beneath this layer is the dark grayish brown soil (10yr 4/2). At a depth of 20-24 cmb.d. the light olive brown soil appeared. (2.5y 5/3) This was in meters N3-5W18. Precise measurements for when this soil type first appears are as follows: NW corner = rock, SW = 21 cm b.d, NE = 20, SE = 24, and middle = 24. The first cut into meters N1-2W18 was begun but not completed today. The humus layer and topsoil are the same

as the previous meters. Overall, the soil is very loose. In meter N3W18, there was a concentration of small rocks, similar to those found in meters N3W16 and N2-1W15-14, which are from a roadbed. However, those were very densely packed and couldn't be picked through like those in N3W18. If the road continues into the area of the new trench meters, we will see it in the stratigraphic profile.

14 pieces of terracotta tile fragments were found. All were very worn and small (1-3 cm).  2 pieces of pottery, 1 impasto and 1 coarseware, both 2 cm.
