Placed the 5 teeth from Box 4 (small box 2) in a plastic cup with label attached and file card inside.
Cleaned the two fragments from Box 4 (small box 2) with alcohol-water solution method.
Box 5 Bone A: Glued on 2 pieces.
Box 4 Bone B: Lisa found and glued 3 pieces.
Box 6 Bone 1: Continued to remove underside from earth by section - remove earth, applied PVA emulsion (15% in vol.), let dry, and repeated procedure.
Box 6 Bone 2: Removed earth from underside. Had to give another coat of PVA solution (15% in vol.) to topside as an end was about to break off. Let dry.
P.M.
Box 6 Bone 1: Trying to avoid earth painted PVA emulsion (15% by vol.) onto the underside of bone fragments. Let dry.
Box 7: Preparation for photo pre-excavation.
- Wet down edges to trace around the bone(s) - using water-alcohol solution which is no longer 50:50.
- One bone is in a separate small mound of earth - Bone 1. Many small rootlets. The bone is in many tiny pieces. Definied edges. Brushed in situ = PVA emulsion (15% in vol.) and let dry.
- Large root in midst -
- Appears to be on a large rock
- Brushed off loose dirt
- Brushed fragile areas with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.) and let dry
Catalogued the following: * ++
Femur - left shaft. (Measurements.) The bone is in solid good condition. The distal end of the shaft anterior surface has a split of 5 cm. The identifiable features are: shaft, beginning of neck, and linea aspera.
++ Measurements - see G. Oliveier, Practical Anthropology. Charles C. Thomas. Springfield, IL: 1969.
* Note: the starred measurements can only be considered approximate as the shaft is not in a complete state.
Summary of treatment:
- Photographed as found - shaft filled with earth.
- Exterior cleaned with alcohol-water solution (50:50) - dried.
- Sprayed interior with the water-alcohol solution, poking the dirt alternately with the end of a long paint brush and a dental pick - when clean, left to dry - then cleaned again with a bottlebrush to remove remaining dirt and rootlets.
- PVA emulsion: Vinauil - 15% in vol. Emerced in pan for 1 hour 15 minutes and then dried.
PA B 72-2 Tomb 5: Box 4 Bone A
Humerus - left shaft.
- Max. preserved length: 270 mm
- Least circumference: 60 mm
- Max diameter midshaft: 19.9 mm
- Min diameter midshaft: 17.2 mm
The shaft was pieced together from several (3) solid pieces plus smaller fragments. Rootlets, etc. had caused the bone to split into several pieces especially noticeable on the proximal half of the posterior surface.
Some warpage occurred at the distal end making the bone appear to curve towards the right. Observabled features include: the groove for the radial merue, beginning of the olecranen fossa, beginning of medial epicondyle (the curve). There is no noticeable tuberosity on nutrient foramen.
Note: some orange discoloration on
the proximal half - due to iron?
Summary of treatment: see page 12.
PA B 72-3 Tomb 5: Box 5 Bone B
Femur - left shaft
- Max. preserved length: 279 mm
- Circumference of midhsaft: 96 mm
- Anterior-posterior diameter of midshaft: 27.8 mm
- Medial-lateral diameter of midshaft: 24.5 mm
Most of the shaft was in one solid piece in a good hard condition. A noticeable split is observed on the proximal half of the anterior surface. Features: linea aspera, proximal part of medial epicondyle?, nutrient feramen.
Note: on proximal half of posterior surface, there is a raised area on the linea aspera. Extosis?
Summary of treatment:
- Photographed in situ - Chris
- Measured in situ (incomplete) - 295 mm
- Cleaned with alcohol-water solution (50:50) - let dry
- Glued (with Klister) pieces together
- Cleaned with alcohol - dried
- Consolidated piece in PVA emulsion - Vinauil - 15% in vol. - 15 minutes for first side and 20 minutes opposite side
