A cut was taken in meters D-F/78-79, extending the depth of the trench of these meters to ca. 90cm. The soil here remained grey/brown in color with many roots and some small rocks. One cassetta of small, word pieces of tile, including a few vitrified pieces, and one half of a box of mixed pottery were discovered.
Work also continued in removing the rocks from the concentration in meters D-E/73-74. Once again the density of the rock concentration
rendered excavation difficult. It appears, however, that the concentration tapers off slightly toward the south. The soil around the rocks was grey/brown in color. One and a half cassette of tile, including a few small vitirified fragments and some plaster were recovered. In addition, one half of a box of worn impasto and coarseware were also found. Moreover, following the removal of some particularly large rocks along the western edge of D-E/73, a soil change was detected in this area. This change, which was first noted at a depth of 107cm., consisted of a transition from grey/brown soil to a mottled soil contains a high concentration
of disintegrated white and yellow plaster and some carbon. In addition, this type of mottled soil appears to be the same as was encountered last year at the base of the trench in meters D-E/70-71. Further clearing will be necessary, however, to determine the relationship of the statigraphy between meters D-E/70-72.

An additional cut was taken in meters D-E/78-79, extending the depth of the trench in this area to ca. 100cm. The soil in the cut remained grey-brown in color with some small roots and rocks. One half of a cassetta of small pieces of worn tile and one box of impasto and coarseware sherds were discovered.
The trench floor in meters D-E/71-72 was brought to a uniform depth of ca. 120cm. in order to more clearly define the extent and depth of the soil change encountered this morning in the western half of D-E/73. Several of the larger rocks remaining along the southern edge of the area were removed. Clearing of the northern baulk and the floor of the trench defined the transition
from a grey/brown to a mottled coil to occur at a depth of ca. 105cm. Moreover, cleaning also revealed that the change in soil was also accompanied by a dimunition of the rock concentration.
In order to determine the relationship of the soil change to the area excavated to the west in meters D-E/71-72 last year, the remainder of the fill and protective plastic was removed from the trench floor pf D-E/71-72. The tiles left below the plastic were found to be in good condition with only a minimum amount of disturbance. The area around the tiles was then cleaned down as well as the northern baulk of D/71-72. This cleaning
revealed that the mottled soil detected this morning represents the eastern estention of the stratum of mottled soil encountered last year. Moreover, priliminary cleaning of the trench floor in meter D/73 revealed that the tile concentration uncovered last year in D-E/71-72 also extends to the east -- at least as far as the eastern half of meter D/73. Further cleaning of the trench floor will now be necessary o determine the full extent of the tile concentration. The depth of the trench in meters D-E/73-74 is currently ca. 110-120cm.
