Topsoil was removed from the rest of meters A-B/2-3.  A/1-3 was then taken down further.  Soil became increasingly lighter in color.  Nothing was found except one piece of modern tile.  At roughly 40 cm, we stopped work and decided to excavate elsewhere.

CA-34

A new trench was begun on the north slope of Poggio Civitate.  This cut will be north-east of Jon Berkin's trench CA-33.  A 3x3 meter trench was gridded and cleared of brush.  Work began in the three meters farthest up the slope of the hill: C/1-3.

Topsoil was removed.  The first cut in these meters, roughly 10 cm deep, was almost gravel: dark soil with many, many small stones.  A second cut to 20-30 cm below the southern baulk was less rocky.  Badly worn terracotta fragments were found at all levels - roughly 1/8 of a cassetta.  One coarseware base fragment was found.
