Daily Log for Friday 13, July 2007
AM: Jennifer A. Hogg and John L. Lape began directing excavation in CC-7. As of today all further trenchbook entries for this trench will begin with JAH/JLL II Team began by leveling the locus 7 extension to the same elevation as locus 5, in order to combine the two extenstions, along with the same soil of locus 2 in the origional trench, into a single locus 8. This was done with trowels and baulk hammers to loosen the soil. This method was chosen instead of a pickpass to avoid disturbing the rock formation we are exposing on the floor of the trench. The southwest corner if the trench, which is part of locus 5, was also worked on in order to level it with the rest of the trench. Special find #1 was recovered while leveling the southwest corner.
Special Find #1: Pan Tile fragment with flange and small impression
Locus 5: 102 CM Below Datum = 22.42 m AE
149.95 East; 96.40 South
(See book for illustration)
Around 9:30 am we began focusing on trimming baulk walls and digging around and under stumbs because locus 5 and 7 were almost level. Special find #2 was recovered from the baulk.
Special Find #2: Decorated Medieval Sherd
Locus 7: Baulk (no elevation); 153.30 East; 94.14 south
(See book for illustration)
The area outside of the trench, 2 meters towards the road, was cleared of organic material and a tile dump from a previous year's excavation was moved to our tile dump because of the possibility of extending the trench to the south.
PM: We began to remove the stumps that were exposed earlier in the day. Part of the team continued to use trowels and baulk hammers to remove soil from around the stumps and others worked on exposing the rock feature. We spent most of the afternoon removing two larege stumps within the trench. An axe was used to break up the stumps. A new extension was laid out on the northeast corner; 2 meters north and 2 meters east from that point (see illustration in book). The soil removed from
the trench today was the same in texture and color as on Wednesday. It is grayish brown in color and slightly grainy in locus 5 and 7. On the north-eastern edge of the trench a lighter grey, sandy soil that seems similar to the sterile locus 3 is beginning to appear. It seems like the rock formation is curving south on the east side of the trench.
(See book for illustration of Loci and planned extension).
The team completed leveling between locus 2, 5, and 7. All soil was troweled into buckets and dumped.
