31 July 2023 AM Excavation in Locus 24 continues in order to remove the remainder of the layer. The pinkish brown soil remains within the depression. Trowels and small handpicks are being used to further reveal the depression. Locus 33 is also being excavated with the same goal of removing the pinkish brown soil. A tile with a possible fingerprint (Special Find #76) was found.
Special Find #76 Flange with fingerprint 177.28 E / 65.64 S 26.46 m AE Locus 33
In Locus 24 a large Impasto vessel handle was found (Special Find #77) with one joining fragment. One additional possibly associated fragment was found.
Special Find #77 Impasto handle (2 joining fragments) 175.44 E / 65.59 S 26.56 m AE Locus 24
In Locus 36 a fragment of a possibly cut bone (Special Find #78) was found. The soil is a dark brown compacted clay. Small amounts of plaster, tile, and bone are being recovered. Large pickaxes continue to be used to lower the level of the soil.

While working to remove the layer of pinkish brown soil in Locus 24’s easternmost extent, a fine impasto tondo was found with one joining fragment (Special Find #79).
Special Find #79 Fineware tondo (2 joining fragments) 175.82 E / 65.12 S 26.54 m AE Locus 24
Other inclusions in Locus 24 included large amounts of bone and burnt bone, vitrified terracotta and plaster, and bulk pottery. Another fineware handle with triple banded decoration was found and made Special Find #80.

While lowering the layer of dark, compacted clay in Locus 36, a fragment of pottery was found with possible coil marks. The fragment was labeled Special Find #81.

In Locus 33 the remaining soil from the locus is being lowered with handpicks and trowels. A large fragment of plaster with a more refined payer of plaster on the surface was recorded as Special Find #82 as a representative sample.

PM Excavation continues with the goal of cleaning the trench for final photos. The area of Locus 24 was troweled and leveled. The dark soil under the pinkish brown soil was revealed throughout the extent of the locus. The baulk wall along the 174 E line was improved in preparation for final photos and section drawings. The depression in the east of the trench (Locus 10) that extends into the eastern extent of T103 was found to continue under Locus 24. Frequent small stones are included within the dark heavily carbon-included layer. In the eastern baulk wall along the 174 line, the carbon layer of Locus 30 and the reddish brown soil of Locus 26 slope to the north from the level of the OC2/Workshop floor to the closing level of Locus 24. In the visible section the layer slopes from the south to north ca. 30 cm. In Locus 36 picks and shovels continue to be used to lower the entire locus. Small amounts of heavily abraded pottery and tile continue to be found. Medium sized roots are present throughout the layer. The entire locus has been lowered ca. 20 cm. The soil remains a densely compacted olive brown clay. Small flecks of colors such as broken plaster and terracotta, broken chert, white stones, are present within the soil. Due to time constraints, the excavation of the section was paused and the section was baulk walled. The trench was swept for final photos. The area around the workshop trenches was swept and tools were moved in preparation for final photos. In Locus 33 work continues while sweeping and cleaning is ongoing in order to remove the final remains of the plaster dense soil. Small handpicks and trowels were used to remove and define the underlying carbon layer that extends under Locus 33. A large carbon deposit, north of the carbon deposit of Locus 30 was revealed and defined with a leaf trowel. It is possible that the deposit is a continuation of the deposit in Locus 30. When closing sweeping was completed and all of Locus 33 was removed, the closing elevations were taken. Closing elevations Locus 24: NW: 26.66 m AE NE: 26.62 m AE SE: 26.45 m AE SW: 26.58 m AE
