The stones in meters S27-28, E137-138 were defined. The soil here is still designated as Locus 1, above and among the stones. Although several of the stones are very large (approx. 50cm long), most are medium size (30-40cm), they do not yet seem to form a constant packing or foundation. The baulks in these meters were also straightened. This work produced 1/8 latte of pottery and bone and 9 tile fragments.

The baulks in the southern, deeper portion of the trench, meters S28-29, E136-138, the areas of Locus 2 and Locus 4, were straightened. In the northern baulk, along the edge of the stone concentration notes above, there does not seem to appear to be any coursing of the stones, with the exception of the western most stones, where one stone clearly rests above a second stone. The Locus 2 soil produced 5 bone fragments, 3 pottery fragments and 18-20 small tile fragments. The locus 4 soil produced 8 fragments of bone/jaw, 1 piece of pottery and 2 bits of tile.

Work was begun lowering the area of meter S27, E136 and approximately 20-25cm of adjoining meters S28, E138 and S27, E137. This is the area of

Locus 3. The soil remained yellow and sandy with very occasional flecks of carbon. As this work will be continued in the afternoon tile and pottery will be recorded at the end of the day. A large section of the pot noted on (page number missing) has been exposed and left in situ. It will be removed as a whole, with the soil on the interior side in order to preserve any possible contents of the vessel. A portion of very thick pan tile flange with a large stone inclusion was made a find (#1).

Continued leveling in the area of Locus 3 to a depth of approximately 74cm b.d. Two large stones were discovered and defined, as well as some fragments of pan and cover tile. The portion of the orangeware vessel mentioned this morning was left in situ, and it does not appear to extend to a base. Locus 3 produced 8-10 small bits of terracotta - approximatley six larger portions of tile were left in situ - 2 fragments of bone and 12 fragments of pottery.

In preparation for extending to the north, the area immediatley to the north of the current excavation was gridded out. This extension includes meters S25-26, E136-140. It should be noted that portions of the E140 meters have already been excavated by T.Gantz (Bk 3) , and thus these meters will only refer to a portion of the actual meters for this season's work.

Work was begun scraping backfill from the northern foundations of the orientalizing structure.
