Work continued in the area of Locus 3, meter S27, E136 and portions of S28, E136.  S27, E137 lowering the whole area to approximately 74 cm.b.d.  This meter area was drawn indicating the orangeware vessel fragments still in situ and a number of tile fragments.  These pieces were then lifted.  The orangeware fragments were lifted- they were not cut out with the interior soil since no base was found in conjunction with the pieces and they seem to come from a fill stratum.  This work produced 13 fragments of pottery, one of bone, and 35-40 fragments of terracotta (some as large as around 20 cm.).  Finds from this area include the orangeware fragments (#1), a pan-tile fragment with an untrimmed edge (#2), a full cover-tile width with an end (#4), a pan-tile fragment with incision (#5), and a portion of a shell(?) (#6).

Work was begun in meters S25-26, E136-138.  A roughly 10 cm. cut was taken throughout these meters with the exception of the southern half of the S26 meters- this 50 cm.  Baulk was left in place in order to preserve sectional information.  The soil here was a medium brown with a matting of grass roots- this was designated as Locus 5 [5Y 6/3 pale olive].

As work will be continued here this afternoon pottery and tile quantities will be recorded then.  It should be noted here that although material recovery was limited in this cut, it did appear to be concentrated in the western meters.  Two joining fragments of incised impasto (#3) were found.

Continued work in meters S25-26/E136-140, leaving the 50 cm. bulk in S26.  The medium brown, Locus 5, soil continued.  It has a somewhat mottled appearance with many large roots.  The whole area was lowered with picks to a level of approximately       cm.b.d., with the exception of portions of meters E139-140, which had several larger rocks - probably associated with teh Upper Building cross-wall, which divides R14 - that were left in situ.  Work was also begun trimming and straightening the baulks.  Locus 5 produced 1/2 of a latte box of pottery and bone, and 60-65 fragments of tile.
