A second cut into Stratum B was continued. Depth of 15-45 cm into stone stratum.

19710900

  • A horse race fragment was discovered at II16 about 15 cm under the surface of B.
  • CA28- II16 (B)

This second cut has revealed a covering of small irregular stones 50=70 cm. below the surface. Several medium stones *c. 30x30x40cm) have been removed in grids LL-II, 17 and 18. ONe large rock, a large triangle 1mx0.80mx0.20m was removed from JJ 17 at 0.30 m- 0.70m. After this area the stones ceased to occur. The workmen began to enter a yellow-clay soil mixutre presumably above the galestra. Fragments of imposto, bucchero, and terracotta

  • #2 A spindle whorl was uncovered in KK16 at a depth of 0.70 m in Stratum "B".
  • CA28- KK16 (B)

The trench was divided; two workmen started to excavate the stone layer in grdis GG-JJ, 16. The purpose is to create a shelf for them to work in and then to excavate forward in the fossa to the south. This will give the profile of the fossa, where the stone begins and where the galestra is.

The new area immediately uncovered small irregular red and grey and yellow limestone.

#3 At 0.50 cm in stratum B in grids HH16 the chin and lips and right

  • #4 At .50 cm in stratum B in grids II 16 a fragment of a raking sima with guilloche pattern was unearthed. Break where hammer struck.

# 5 0.55 m in grid GG16 a small fragment of procession frieze came t olight. It is a good detail of a back of the earl's seat

The remaining part of the trench (grids NN 16-20 = JJ 16-20) was brought down to a level 0.20-0.30 m below the surface, an area defined by yellow-clayish soilk which is apparently barren. A large number of stones (c. 0.30x0.30x0.40 m + 0.10 m) were removed from grids LL 17-20 and continuing into II 17-20. These stones begin where the yellow-clayish soil drops (grid LL 17-20) and seem to end as grid II 17-20 begins. INterspersed are a few large stones of irregular shape. The

stones do not run deeper than 0.50-0.60 m beneath the surface. Under them the small stone fill is found.

Work ceased in the shelf area for the day at a depth of ca. 1 m in frid 16, GG-JJ. The upper part of the trench (grids 19-20) is half excavated to a depth of 0.40 m. IN both areas finds were sporadic and isolated. Grids 19-20 which are being excavated to the beginning of Stratum B disclosed a full box of sherds marked Stratum (A) and a bag of bones (19-20). These sherds are not remarkable consisting mainly of abraded pieces of terracottsa, imposto and bucchero, a few feet and lips and broken handles.

A full box of sherds also came from Stratum B, in the shelf, mostly from grid 16 HH-II at a depth from 0.70 m- 1.25 m below the surface. Many of the fragments fit. The qality is better than from Stratum A, consisting of the frags. of a buff-colored black painted cup, an unpainted buff colored cup fragment, several belly frags. with potter's marks and some red earthen ware frags. Several feet and lips were uncovered of medium utility- ware such as have already been excavated and restored.
