Morning

Work began by excavating the dark brown layer in AA-CC/8-9.  At a depth of approximately 20 cm, a layer of tightly packed, fairly large stones appeared in AA-CC/8; this was left intact.

Next, the red layer cut in AA-CC/8-9 was begun (because the layer of stones was left intact, it was mostly the red layer in AA-CC/9 which was excavated today).  The red layer was excavated to a depth of about 60 cm.  This area produced a large quantity of tile and some

pottery.  The pottery includes one especially notable find.  Three fragments of the fine orange ware lid which was excavated on July 17 from B-9 were found today in AA/9.  Two of the fragments preserve the stamped mountain goat pattern. Three fragments were found at a depth of approximately 60 cm.  The greater part of the lid found in B-9 was at a depth of c. 65 cm.

While work continued in meters AA-CC/8-9, the excavation of the gray layer in DEF/8-9 was continued.  Yesterday, bedrock was exposed at a depth of c. 1 meter in D/8-9.  Today, as work progressed through E/8-9 and into F/8-9, the level at which bedrock was reached deepened.  In meter F, bedrock has not been reached and the depth of the floor at this time is c. 1.15 meters.  While yesterday's excavation of the gray layer produced little, today's produced a great deal. Two boxes of fine red ware and other sorts of pottery were found in EF/8-9.  Also, and most notable, are two statue fragments which were found in

E-8.  One is a complete lion's paw which is still attached to a fragment of ridgepole and the other appears to be a fragment of a wing (its shape and incised design suggest this).  Large quantities of tile were also found in EF/8-9.

Tile: 4 cassetta

Pottery: 3 boxes
