Morning

Work began by simultaneously continuing the gray layer cut in DEF/8-9 and AA-CC/8-9.  The gray layer in DEF/8-9, the area which produced the statue fragments yesterday, produced nothing today (one incised rocchetto).  In D/8-9, the bedrock was met at a depth of c. 1 meter.  However, from there it slopes to a depth of c. 1.25 meters in EF/8-9.  This area was all cleaned down to bedrock.  The soil contained very little carbon -- but tile was particularly frequent (5 cassetta).  Little pottery.

The red layer cut in AA-CC/8-9 also produced very little.  The tight stone packing which occupied AA-CC/8 was removed -- it was approximately 20 cm in depth.  The red layer beneath the stone packing contained several bucchero fragments (3 handles) -- one of them preserving a stamped design.  Also, it is notable that meter BB-8 contained one fragment of burned ivory and two

chunks of bronze slag.  The ivory and the bronze were found right up against BB-7 at a depth of c. 50 cm.  After the red layer cut was completed, the gray layer in AA-CC/8-9 was removed.  This area contained no carbon, little tile, and very little pottery.  Bedrock was struck at a depth of c. 80 cm.

Next, work continued by cleaning the topsoil from meters D/5-6 and c. 30 cm into E-7 (a stump occupies most of E-7 -- this is the reason that only the area to the south of the stump in E-7 will be excavated at this point).  When the topsoil was cleared, the dark brown layer was begun.   The dark brown layer in this area contained two large chunks of bronze slag and a nice profile of a small gray ware cup (it resembles a cup found in C-5 on July 10 -- find #6).
