Continued down through Locus 2.  After approximately 5cm, there was a soil change to a compact, hard, light colored soil; "galestra-like".  It was decided to close locus 2 on this soil, even though it was very uneven throughout the trench.  The compact soil rises up from the north side of the trench to the south side, so that near the south wall locus 2 is only a few centimeters deep.

Locus 2 contained some bone and a number of carbonized fragments.  Notably, a lump of charcoal and possibly bone or ivory that had been burnt.

Drawing of trench

Note that some of the terracotta fragments appear to be burned as well.

Terracotta: 1/2 latte box.

Pottery: 1/5 latte box.

Locus 3 was opened since there is a significant amount of terracotta sticking out of the gray soil.  The northern 1/3 of the trench is almost devoid of material.  This is the part nearest CD4, so it seems that the tile fall discovered in CD4 does not extend S/SE toward CD9.

PM

Continued working in Locus 3.  The "galestra-like" layer is only a few cm thick, and gave way to an orange/yellow clay.  Went down approximately 10cm on north side, which is still sterile.

Carbonized fragments continue to appear near east wall.  The "mound" of terracotta and impasto were removed in Locus 3.  Interestingly, under and near the terracotta are many bones of some king of animal.  The bones were left in situ for excavation tomorrow.

The teracotta "mound" proved to be a combination of pan tiles, ridge-pole tiles and part of a pot.  A significant amount of black impasto fragments which look to be from the same vessel were found near the east wall.

Terracotta: approximately 6 latte boxes (1/6 cassette).

Bulk Pottery: approximately 1/6 latte box.
