T-23 Summary: A new cut was begun into meters D-C/10.  The 90 cm cut was continued into B/11-12.

  • Tile: 5
  • Pottery: 2

The 90 cm cut was continued through AA/11-12 and into BB/11-12.  The soil continues to remain brown-gray with some but not much carbon.  However, there has been abundant tile and a notable amount of bone.  Two large stones which protruded from the 60 cm cut were removed.  One of these appears to have been partially chiselled into a rectangular block and measures approximately 70 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm.  Three sides, including the large face, show evidence of perhaps being chiseled flat.

In order to obtain further fragments of the bone handle found yesterday, meters C-D/10 were staked out and the topsoil removed.  These meters were thought to be a good choice to recover more of the handle since they lie right in line with fragments found in 1978 by Matt Caras, which appear to be part of the same handle (or a similar one), and yesterday's find in D/11.  The finds from T-23 1979 were located in meters C/8 and C/9.

At 40 cm in meters D-C/10, a heavy concentration

of stone was encountered.  Two of these larger stones were removed.  The remainder of the stones were cleaned down and the earth towards the SE of the rocks in D-C/10 was excavated to 75 cm.  The cut was 40 cm to the NW into meters D-C/10.  See diagram below.

Note that while the rock packing is 70 cm wide and could possibly be a portion of a wall, there is a heavy tile layer below the rock concentration.  The stratigraphy of the D-C/10 cut remains similar to the cut to 90 cm in D/11-12.

The large stone described in today's first paragraph was left up at the site.  Most of today's tile came from meters AA-BB/11-12.

P.M.

No work was done on the site this afternoon.  However, the stone layer in D-C/10 at 40 cm was photographed.
