Excavations began in locus 3 (see AJC/ARR II pg 23 pg 25 ) with a baulk hammer and trowel. The soil is extremely backed and it is hard to determine its color. It is a sandy brown and flaky. It doesnÂ’t compress when pressed upon, it crumbles. Work in locus 4 started using trowels and small brooms to scrap down and clear the northern meter to look for any soil changes. While troweling a piece of iron slag was discovered (special find #1).

A pick pass was done in the southern meter and a half of locus 4 as it appears that all of the locus 4 soil has been removed from the northern area. While picking up the soil we found a piece of pottery decorated with nubs along with a piece of molded pottery.

A second pick pass was done of locus 4 through the southern area. Found an intact ribbon handle (special find #4). In the

southeastern part of locus 4 more of the clayey white and sandy yellow soil is appearing. It is the same soil that is being revealed under the locus 4 soil to the north. We will now

Work to remove the entirety of locus 4 to determine to deposition of the two new soil types. A third pick pass was done of locus 4 , which is now drasticly decreasing in size in the horizontal plane. While picking up the third pick pass a piece of molded pottery with a handle attachment was found (special find #5).

Clean up of third pick pass continued, revealing a piece of iron slag (special find #6). Remaining locus 4 pickpass soil was removed and the fourth pickpass was done, focusing on an area approximately 1.5 m square in the southeast corner. Pottery, terracotta and carbon are all still present in what remains of the locus 4 soil.

Work to scrape down locus three also continues, with very few finds of any type. A fifth pickpass in locus four was done, concentrating on an area about 1 x 1.5 m in the southeast corner. Remaining locus 4 soil is now very shallow.

Locus 4 pick pass #5 also produced a piece of decorated bucchero (special find #7).

One final pickpass in locus 4 loosened the remaining soil in that locus. A portion of a coarseware pot was recovered that may belong to a fragment found in 2007 (an otherwise un-special find).

Scraping/leveling of locus three is proceeding albeit slowly. Under the baked top crust there are patches of olive green soil (organic) mixed with patches of grey and orange-brown rocks, badly decomposed. The only material being recovered is coming from around the stump and in a northeastern area, roughly 0.5 x 0.5 m. This area displays no soil change.
