Daily Log 15/07/2009

AM

Work for the day began with a pick pass though locus 4 . Locus 8 work continued with a baulk hammer. In locus 4 we found while picking up the soil a piece of iron slag (special find #1), a bronze fragment (special find #2) and a second piece of iron slag (special find #3).

Locus 8 was excavated with baulk hammers and trowels to its full extent. It yielded very few pieces of bone, pottery, and terracotta. Locus 8 was closed, closing photos and elevations taken.

A second pick was completed in Locus 4 . While excavating that area a piece, the third of the day, was found (Special find #4). Also found an unusual piece of terracotta that could possibly be a statue fragment.

A third pick pass was done in the eastern portion (meter) of the trench. The soil remains the same, containing material as well as many carbon inclusions.

While finishing cleaning the last pick pass of the morning the clay like soil of Locus 5 was uncovered in the northern part f the pick pass. We scraped the soil to expose the extent of the soil. Another pick pass was done between the 150E and 151E mark. The soil was sorted into

Buckets & dumped. A 4 th pick pass was completed in the southern part of the locus between 97 S and 96 S. While cleaning a piece of vitrified terracotta was found (special find #6).

The baulk walls were trimed along the 97S meter. The floor was also scraped to help qlarify the soil changes in the northern section of Locus 4 . The eastern part of locus 4 was scraped down to the galestra soil
