Opening daily photographs taken of Locus 18 and the progress on the Baulk Trim. Although excavation is not being carried out in Locus 18 today, opening daily elevations taken:
NW Corner (inside the southern safety step, ~93E): 23.88m A.E.
NE Corner: 23.87m A.E.
SE Corner: 23.85m A.E.
SW Corner (inside the southern safety step, ~93E): 23.86m A.E.
Work begun with a small hand pick sectioning a small triangular area of the eastern baulk wall. Small concentrations of materials, including pottery, bone, and terra cotta, being removed, often small but well preserved fragments. While hand picking, a bronze fibula coil and associated fragments found.

Simultaneously, the rocks being revealed by sectioning are defined by a leaf trowel. The level of the section has been dropped past the sloping yellow soil. While handpicking, a fragment of possible butchered bone recovered.

PM Because the level of the section has been lowered to a height at which it is possible to carefully use a pick axe, a pick axe is now being used to cut the section down towards the level of Locus 18 . Buckets will also now be sorted into wheel barrows. Some material including terra cotta, pottery, and bone recovered in small concentration. The fragments have become larger in size and are still well preserved. While sorting a bucket in the wheel barrow, a fragment of slipped pottery found.

The rocks of the circular feature have continued to be defined using trowels and leaf trowels. There are several more rocks which have been revealed below the circular feature, including a large rectangular stone about 20cm in height which sticks out into the section about 15cm (towards the west) and crosses the entire section (running north to south). A large pithos rim fragment also removed. While sorting in the wheel barrow, a fragment of burnt bone
recovered.

The level of the section has now dropped to the deteriorating rock pack. Very few artifacts are being recovered, and they are much smaller and more worn. Work ended for the day when the level of Locus 18 achieved. More work needed tomorrow to properly trace the coursing of the circular feature.
Daily Totals:
Baulk Trim:
Terra cotta: 1/3 bowl
Pottery: 3 lattes (198 fragments)
Bone: 1/4 latte (35 fragments)
