Stratigraphical profile of east baulk, N4W13.

A.M.

The morning began by taking closing depths for Locus 4. They are as follows for meter N4W12:

• NE = 35 cm b.d.
• NW = 36 cm b.d.
• SE = 38 cm
• SW = 38 cm b.d.
• Middle = 37 cm b.d.

In meters N3W12 (which was only half excavated) the closing depth were:

• Middle north = 35 cm b.d
• Middle south = 34 cm b.d.

In meter N3W13, they were as follows:

• SW = 37 cm b.d
• NW = 25 cm b.d.
• Middle = 35 cm b.d.

A 20 cm cut was taken in N4W13, 35 cm in from the east baulk to produce a baulk that would illustrate a stratigraphic profile closer to the edge of the stone cluster (possible feature, man-made or natural). The interface between the dark grayish brown soil and the light olive brown soil is clearly detected in the profile.

Another 10 cm was troweled off in N4W13 exposing more of the stones. They seem to form a semi-circular shape. (see plan on opposite page) that extends into meter N3W13. It was decided to take down meter N4W14 and half of N3W14 10 cm to see if this stone formation continues.

An abundance of pottery and tile fragments was recovered in the north west quadrant of N4W13. The concentration is located in what seems to be the semi-circular rock formation. In the northeast quadrant of meter N4W14 there is also a concentration of pottery and tile. It is here where the decorated pieces of pottery (with handle) were found.

Because the soil in N4W13 is consistent with that of locus 4 in meters N3W13, N3W12, N4W12, locus 6 now equals locus 4.

This means that locus 5 equals locus 3, and locus 7, because it has the same soil consistency as locus 3, would equal locus 3, only in a different meter. (see locus forms for further explanation). This soil in locus 7 is dark grayish brown, very dry and contains many roots. This soil is also rocky.

The opening depths for locus 7 are as follows in meter N4W14:

• NW = 9cm b.d.
• NE = 18 cm b.d.
• SW = 9 cm b.d.
• SE = 17 cm b.d.
• Middle = 16 cm b.d.

And in meter N3W14,

• NW = 9cm b.d.
• NE = 14 cm b.d.
• Middle = 11 cm b.d.

A 10 cm pick was taken in locus 7. The closing depths for the day in meter N4W14 and half of N3W14 are:

• SW = 17 cm b.d.
• SE = 22 cm b.d.
• NW=18 cm b.d.
• NE=24 cm b.d.

In locus 6, 34 tile fragments were found

(7cm-2cm), 5 pieces of impasto (6-2cm), 23 pieces of coarseware (13-2cm) and 1 piece of bone. In locus 7, there were 3 pieces of coarseware, 27 pieces of impasto, 1 piece of impasto that may join the decorated vessel (w/handle) in 4 pieces of impasto. There was also 30 tile fragments (9-2 cm) and 12 pieces of bone, the majority join.
