A.M.

An approximate 15 cm cut was taken in meter N4W12 to further define the east baulk of meter N4W13, where the feature, most likely naturally occurring, exists. A lense of the light olive brown soil (2.5Y 5/3) is seen in the stratigraphic profile of the south baulk of N4W13, to the east corner. A plan of this baulk was drawn indicating where this lens occurred ( see p. 66 ).

It looks as though underneath the cluster of rocks, tile, and pottery there was a lens of the dark grayish brown soil, similar to that of locus 1 and 3 earlier. Pottery and tile came out of the interface where locus 3 and 4 meet. Further down into the light olive brown soil, archaeological material vanishes. On the

floor of meter N4W12, limestone chunks (decaying) and yellow and gray clayish soils appear. The soil is completely sterile here at this depth. Nothing was seen in the stratigraphic profile of the East wall of N4W13. (the opening depth of locus 4 is 29cm b.d.) Closing depths will be recorded tomorrow.

The closing depths for Locus 5, which consisted of dark grayish brown soil, were as follows: NW=20 cm b.d., SW=18, NE=20 cm, SE=20 cm, mid=20cm.

Another 5cm cut was taken in N4W13. This was in the light olive brown soil so this cut is assigned as locus 6. The ending depth for the day is locus 6 is as follows: NW=23 cm b.d., NE =24, SW=25 cm, SE =25, mid 25 cm. Photos were taken of meters N3-4, W11-12 and the south baulk of N4W13.

The material recovered in Locus 4 in N4W12 consists of 14 fragments of pottery (6 cm), 7 coarseware, 7 impasto (1 base) (1 cm) and 3 small pieces of tile (1 cm).

The material recovered in Locus 6 for the day consists of 10 pieces of impasty (2-8 cm) 3 pieces of orangeware, and 8 pieces of coarseware, 3 pieces of bone, 1 fragment of a pan tile (11 cm), 62 fragments of tile (1-12 cm) and 2 plaster fragments.

There were 2 finds from Locus 4: an impasto rim and a piece of incised impasto.
