Today the goal of excavation is to finish revealing and then lifting out the bottom half of the terracotta pipe. The northern terminus is still not uncovered and in order to successfully lift the pipe out, the terminus needs to be fully uncovered. Before excavation began, detailed photos of the currently revealed fragments with numbers overlaid was done along with a detailed drawing (see next page for details) so that next season we can have a visual map for the reconstruction.
In order to expose the northern terminus, the current area of excavation, the northern baulk of Locus 7 will need to be trimmed back to the north. In the process of trimming back the baulk more architectural terra cotta laying flat on the bottom surface was found. Similar to yesterday, the terracotta will be defined and photographed in-situ. Once the terracotta was defined and photographed, the pieces were systematically excavated and placed into a bowl. Two architectural flange pieces were found and will be sent down as a special find.
Special Find #12: Architectural terracotta
Coordinates: 170.60 E/ 40.07 S
Elevation: 27.91 m. A.E.
Once all the architectural terracotta was lifted, focus shifted to the removal of the terracotta drain fragments. As each fragment was lifted, a paper with its corresponding number was either put in a large latte/juice box with the fragments, or in the case of the larger fragments, a full sheet of paper with corresponding number will be laid on top and carried down to the magazzino by hand.
PM
Post-lunch work continued on the removal of the pipe fragments. Once all the fragments were lifted, the trench area was prepped for closing locus and closing trench photos which will need to wait until tomorrow morning for lighting purposes. In the meantime, Locus 6’s closing drawing will be done as well as the closing drawing for Locus 7.
