AM

Locus 6 soil wet from rain yesterday, but able to be excavated. Pick pass initiated in the north moving southward. Rocks turned up by the pick, 5-15cm in length, removed. One stump near the northeastern corner of the extension removed. Terra cotta and pottery recovered in small concentrations. One fragment of iron slag recovered in the southern meter.

Locus 6

The dense, claylike medium brown-grey soil has been reveled over the extent of the extension. Baulk walls trimmed, material collected with Locus 6 bulk material. Leveling done across the whole extension and roots clipped. During leveling,

one fragment of Medieval pottery recovered.

Trench scraped down from north to south in preparation for new pictures. Pictures taken, Locus 7 declared open. Opening elevations taken:

NW Corner: 27.55m A.E.

NE Corner: 27.62m A.E.

SE Corner: 27.48m A.E.

SW Corner: 27.48m A.E.

Locus 7 soil still wet from previous rain yesterday. It is a dense claylike medium brown-grey soil. It has roots, 5-10cm rocks, single stump in northeast corner. Artifacts recovered include small fragments of terra cotta and pottery in small concentrations. Bucket from Locus 7 sieved, no artifacts recovered. Bucket from Locus 7 sieved, 1 fragment of pottery 3-7cm recovered. Continued using hand picks from north to south to lower the elevation. Bucket from Locus 7 sieved, 2cm terra cotta and 1-2cm pottery recovered. Bucket from Locus 7 sieved, no artifacts recovered. Soil remains consistent as leveling continues. Bucket from Locus 7 sieved, no artifacts recovered. Roots clipped.
