Soil slightly damp from rain yesterday, but able to excavate. Locus 5 leveled to the elevation of Loci 3 and 4 using hand picks and trowels. A few fragments of terra cotta and pottery recovered during sorting. Simultaneously, in preparation for taking photographs, Locus 3 , 4 , and the remainder of Locus 5 scraped down and leaf debris removed. In Locus 5 one fragment of bone and a fragment of bronze found.

Locus 5

Photographs taken of Locus 3 , Locus 4 (with its stone feature), and Locus 5 . Because of the linear nature of the stone feature in Locus 4 it was decided to halt excavation in T 62's Loci 3 - 5 until T 61 and its extension are to

the elevation of T 62 in order to determine whether there is any similar feature at the same elevation in T 61. Because of the large base fragment in the southwest section of Locus 5 as well as other fragments of pottery and terra cotta included in Locus 5's current elevation, T 62 extended two meters south by three meters from the west towards the east, remaining one meter from the eastern extent of the original extent of T 62. Opening photographs and elevations taken for Locus 6 :

NW Corner: 27.66m A.E. (92E/53S)

NE Corner: 27.72m A.E. (95E/53S)

SE Corner: 27.58m A.E. (95E/55S)

SW Corner: 27.58m A.E. (92E/55S)

Locus 6 is a dark brown soil heavily included with organic debris and roots. First pick pass commenced in the northern meter by three meters moving towards the south. Pick pass turned up small rocks 5-10cm in length and uncovered two small stumps approximately 30-40cm in diameter. During cleaning and sorting, terra cotta and diagnostic bone recovered.

Locus 6

Second pick pass commenced in the northern meter moving southward. A few larger rocks 20-40cm in length revealed along the northern extent of Locus 6 . In some areas where the pick penetrated a bit deeper, soil change revealed--a more claylike, densely packed medium brown-greyish soil. Many roots present and removed using clippers.

PM

Second pick pass completed. Soil sorted and cleaned into buckets. Fragments of terra cotta and pottery recovered. Soil heavily included with rocks 5-10cm in length as well as many roots. Beneath the Locus 6 soil in the south the new soil type is also being encountered. Third pick pass begun in the north, with lighter leveling done in the south to remove the Locus 6 soil. Rain caused an early

end to the day. The original extent of T 62 tarped overnight; the extension left exposed.

Daily Totals:

Locus 5:

Terra cotta: 1/10 bowl

Pottery: 1/8 latte (32 fragments)

Bone: 2 fragments

Locus 6:

Terra cotta: 1/6 bowl

Pottery: 11 fragments
