  • Tomb 5, Box 1 Bone 2
  • Femur - left
  • Max. preserved length: 310 mm

The bone was found lying on a rock. It was in a fragmented state and only held together by earth. Upon removal, it broke into many small pieces. The only identifiable features are: the shaft and the curve of the neck.

The bone is very fragile at the distal end due to a thin "join" and is warped, going upwards at both ends.

Summary of treatment:

  1. Cleaned pieces with alcohol-water solution (50:50).
  2. Pieced together fragments
  3. Brushed on PVA emulsion (15% in vol.). Piece broke. Cleaned edges and then PVAed.
  4. Attempted to glue the 2 parts together - very difficult because of the angle of warpage.
  5. Fragments left over are bagged with enclosed label (31).

Worked on preparation for cataloguing several bones. e.g., writing cards without assigning a number as yet asthey are not finished.

Skulls

Separated the two lumps of earth which contained the two skulls. There was a deep crevass/crack between them and the separated was not difficult.

Skull X

  1. Consolidated the side facing the crevass/crack.
  2. Let dry
  3. Moved the skull to a box and placed it on foam rubber.
  4. Sorted through the earth which was under the skull looking for small bone fragments.

Noted:

  1. The gallestra is very sheet-like and when sliced shows amica-like or shiney particles.
  2. A large stone found under the skull - saved and labelled.
  3. Large root system.
  4. Many tiny bone fragments.
  5. Found unknown white substance clinging to the earth - ? talc
  6. One piece of bucchero.

P.M.

Thelma sorted through dirt of Box 7 and found more of the little white things. Bagged and enclosed label.

Found: one small fragment of terracotta, two fragments with bronze contact

Skull 7

  1. With a small soft brush, gently brushed down the surface
  2. Sifted through the dirt along the edge of the mound
  3. Began to remove the earth around the bones and teeth to define edges and clean surfaces.
  4. Continued to uncover bone.
  5. Consolidated - painted in situ with PVA emulsion (15% in vol.) and let dry.

Note: The denultine on 2 teeth had a post-excavation chip: Right M (lower) and left I1 (upper).

The goal for both skulls is to consolidate them to retain their shape and to make them ready for exhibit. It was thus decided by B.J. Herst and E. Nielsen that the teeth should be consolidated in situ and that it would be more advantageous to do this than to remove them from the earth for dental measurements.
