Opening photos for loci 9 + 10 taken. Locus 9 was declared in the middle of the trench, where the tile deposition of Locus 7 was formerly located.  The soil of Locus 9 is grayish-green and claylike.  Opening elevations for Locus 9 were taken.

Opening Elevations - Locus 9

  • North End: 226cm b.d. (26.72m A.E.)
  • Middle: 232cm b.d. (26.66m A.E.)
  • South End: 232cm b.d. (26.66m A.E.)

The location of the corners of Locus 9 are:

  • NW corner: 52S/168.81E
  • NE corner: 52S/169.31E
  • SW corner: 56S/168.22E
  • SE corner: 56S/169.93E

Locus 9 was picked and the soil was shovelled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow.  After cleaning and sorting the soil, it was decided to pick a 1x2m portion of the trench, in order to quickly see the stratigraphy and sound for iron-age materials.  The 1x2m meters were arbitrarily placed in the SE corner of the trench, with borders at app.

  • NW: 54S/170E: 230cm b.d. (26.68m A.E.)
  • NE: 54S/171E: 233cm b.d. (26.65m A.E.)
  • SW: 56S/170E: 229cm b.d. (26.69m A.E.)
  • SE: 56S/171E: 227cm b.d. (26.71m A.E.)

This 1x2m portion of the trench was designated Locus 10 .  The soil is a greenish-brown, sandy one with white inclusions and little material.

PM

The southeast corner of the trench (the 1x2m area: Locus 10 ) continued to be picked.  Shortly after though, a yellow, flakey soil was uncovered, which may be galestra.  The new soil was designated Locus 11 and opening photos wre taken.  The locus was then picked, with soil being shovelled into buckets and being sorted into the wheelbarrow.  No material was found.
