Morning

Work began by simultaneously continuing work in ABC/4, D/5-6, and E-7.

By the end of the morning, meters ABC/3-4 were

excavated to bedrock.  In meters ABC/3-4, the red layer continues to be thick.  It is very red, chunky, and packed with tile.  Beneath the red layer, the gray layer in meters ABC/3-4 also produced a lot of tile.  Unlike the gray layer in meters 8-10, there was no heavy black burn layer just above the bedrock in meters 3-4.  Bedrock was simply struck at a depth of approximately 1 meter.  The entire cut in meters ABC/3-4 produced little other than tile (of which 8 cassetta were excavated).  Several bucchero and impasto sherds, a high red ware foot, a fragment of a bronze nail, and two painted sherds were excavated.  However, at the end of the morning, the red layer in ABC/2 was begun.  Three fragments of worked ivory were excavated from A-2.

In meters D/5-6, the dark brown layer cut was continued.  In D-6, a gray ware handle was excavated which will probably join a profile of a small gray ware cup found in D-6 yesterday.  Next, the red layer and the gray layer in D/5-6 were excavated.  Other

than a large quantity of tile, this area produced little -- only some pottery.  This area was cleaned to bedrock.

Work in E-7 (only the first 30 cm of E-7 were excavated this morning) produced a great deal of material.  In E-7, the red layer produced approximately 30 fragments of worked ivory.  The ivory appears to have continued from D-7.  Triangles and rectangles still dominate -- and many of the fragments are incised with linear designs.  Almost all are burned.  Most notable is a fragment of a carved ivory figure.  From waist to neck is preserved.  The position of the arm and the size of the torso are identical to the fragment of a woman found on July 19 ( p. 174, #14 ) in D-8.

Also found in E-7 is a fragment of a painted aryballos.

Stucco, plaster, and tile continue to be frequent everywhere in Tesoro 23.
