1.   It was decided to test M-O/69, which has consistently produced more material in the deeper levels than did M-O/71-70, by using trowels and small hammers to see if there is definitely no association amongst the finds at this level.  A 5 cm cut is being taken.  At noon break, we have exposed tile and perhaps pithos frags.  It is not clear if there is relevant conjuction or not.  Tile was left in ground hence cassetta was empty.

tile = 1/3 cassetta

pottery = 1/4 latte

2.   We decided to remove as much of the topsoil and subsurface soil in the M-O/68-66 meters.  This decision is based upon the random nature of finds in M-O/71-69 upper levels.  A 35-40 cm cut was completed in meteres O/67-66.  A large stump sits in western 1/2 of O/66.  Soil at finish of cut is a medium brown.

tile = 1/3 cassetta

pottery 1/3 latte

1.   Continued cleaning with trowels in M-O/69 the decision to do so was good but no clear evidence of tile fall yet.  The soil matrix the tile and pithos sherds sit in is a medium to light brown soil with inclusions of bright orage/red plaster and charcoal.  But the soil is not the dark brown of 70/71.

tile = 2/3 cassetta

pottery = 1 latte

2.   Continued 35-40 cm cut into squares M-N/67-66.  The soil is both (in sequence to lower depths) dark brown surface and medium brown subsurface.  Finds where small and worn mixed tile and large array of pottery.

  • Find #8
  • M/67
  • 33 cm
  • Gorgon head fragment
  • Notes on find context:
    • Piece found in medium brown subsurface layer at 33 cm depth.  Pottery is mixed predominantly impasto, but with some bucchero/buccheroid and orange ware.  Tile was small and worn mixed cover and pan.  The head was found lying face down, roughly horizontal to soil surface.  Although one would expect significant disturbance of this depth, roughly contiguous spatially to this piece was a series of joining impasto fragments, which do not provide complete profile.
