AM: Excavation was delayed by three hours this morning due to the soil being very wet after a rainstorm last night. Excavation began with a pick pass in the northern end of Locus 1. Soil was sorted by hand into buckets. The soil was medium brown clay and moist from the storm although quickly drying out. There were inclusions present of tile, pottery, and small limestones. During the pick pass a modern shotgun shell was uncovered in the NE corner of Locus 1. Some plaster was also uncovered, including a piece with a reed impression which was recorded as Special Find 9: Elevation: 26.87m AE Coordinates: 174.50E/60.16S Another plaster fragment with reed impressions was recovered and recorded as SF 10: Elevation: 26.83m AE Coordinates: 175.82E/59.99S PM: The afternoon began with a pick pass in the southern end of Locus 1. The soil was medium brown, clayish, and clumpy with some moisture remaining but increasing dryness. Inclusions of plaster continue to be quite numerous in the SE corner. There are also fairly frequent carbon deposits, some tile and pottery. A possible slag fragment was recovered and recorded as SF 11: Elevation: 26.89m AE Coordinates: 174.90E/63.36S The soil further north in Locus 1 was loosened with another pick pass. Soil consistency and inclusions remained the same.
