AM

Roots were clipped and excess dirt was collected in preparation for the opening of Locus 4. Pictures and opening elevations were taken.

Locus 4 Opening Elevations:

A: 27.76 mAE

B: 27.72 mAE

E: 27.87 mAE

F: 27.83 mAE

A pick pass was done of the northern meter of the trench. Small rocks and roots are being turned up, and larger rocks are exposed. The soil is lighter in color, finer, and less clay-like and clumpy than the soil of locus 3. Very little terracotta and pottery are found. A pick pass is done of the western meter of the trench. Slag is being found throughout (Special Finds #1-5) and will now be bulk found for locus 4. Ample pottery and bone is found. Larger rocks are uncovered in the northwest part of the

A pick pass was done in the northern meter of the trench. Little terracotta and pottery is found, as well as some slag. A pick pass of the western meter is done. Some terracotta, ample pottery, bone, and slag is found. Hand picking is done in the eastern half of the northern meter in order to expose the rocks cropping up in that area and to bring the soil level down to that of locus 2 in the original trench. Some baulkwalling is done in the northern wall. A yellowish hard packed soil is coming up in the middle of the western meter.
