Continuation of work on the tile fall in F-H/91-94 resulted in near completion of the lifting.  G-H/92-93 showed some signs of remaining tile, and will be swept down and cleaned as soon as possible.  The baulks in F/91-93 began to be shaved off and cleaned, so that they remain square to the rest of the trench.

Tiles found in this baulk washout are being treated in exactly the same way as tiles found elsewhere in the fall.  Bone, often burnt, was found almost exclusively in burn pockets below the tiles.  Two and a half boxes of pottery were recovered, including a number of large storage jar pieces which may match ones taken down at other times.

The architect's longitudinal section east-west through the Southeast Building's floor was amended by adding the "east" tile fall and trench floor levels in H-I/94-96.

P.M.

Tile fall continued to be cleaned and swept.  Most tiles have been removed from the "floor" area, so that most attention this afternoon was paid to cleaning the baulks and coordinating the tiles found there and buried under the washout.  Of note here is the third example of a pan tile flange with rectangular cut (Find #8 - see also MRS II, p. 237 Find #5 , and ).

Continued exploration of the north end of the east tile fall - here, I-J/94-95 - revealed still no

tile.  (This is the end of the fall where tiles had not been found when a small channel had been dug.  Today's work expanded that channel somewhat.)  The soil in this end is not the dark red, burnt type found associated with the other east tiles, but rather a powdery yellow-gray mute closely akin to the plaster found above the tiles in the main fall.  This may mean that there are tiles connecting the east and main falls which simply haven\'t been uncovered yet, and are below this light layer.

The eastern portion of L/96 was excavated to a depth of approximately 20 cm.  Some rocks and tiles were uncovered at this level and left in place in the brown, rooty topsoil.  No pottery, but several pieces of bone were recovered.
