Trench photos.
July 25, 1988
A.M.
The western 50 cm of K96 was cleaned to trench floor level (approx. 40 cm), leaving the rocks in place. Tiles in KL97 were lifted, leaving the surrounding rocks in place. These two actions were performed as preparation for excavating L96 (to follow the line of rocks and tile) without damaging the exposed tile area. One cassetta of tiles and several pieces of pottery were recovered.
Tile fall meters G-H/91-93 were cleaned. Many pieces of molded storage pottery, including the two handles left in situ for over a week, were removed and taken to the magazzino to be checked for joins. Several pieces of tile with fingermarks were found. Two boxes of pottery and bone - the latter often burnt - were removed.
The stump in H/91-92 was removed and cleaning of its roots was begun. Very little pottery was recovered, but a rocchetto fragment, bronze, ridgepole tile fragments, and one cassetta of tiles were among the finds.
The area below the stump was also cleaned.
The cover tile which extended through the stump preserved a letter as well as its full width; another cover tile preserved full width, while a third cover tile had an incised letter. One half box pottery and several pieces of vitrified plaster were removed.
Meters F-H/95 were completed excavated to trench floor level (the western portion had been left at the apparent level of the tile fall). Less than 1/4 cassetta of tile and 1/2 box pottery were found in this dry, brown, rocky soil.

P.M.
More of the tile fall from G-H/92-93 was removed. A fragment of cover tile preserving full width was found, as was a piece of pan tile preserving a fingermark. One rim piece of a molded storage jar was recovered, unlike the others removed this morning. With this exception, very little pottery in general and no other storage pottery was found in the afternoon shift.
Of interest in regard to this tile fall is the fact that no antefix heads or lion spouts have been found in the area, although it appears that there is only a small amount of tile left to be collected. In addition, no cover tiles preserving ends finished to allow the attachment of antefix heads have been found, nor have pieces of sima.
Meters L/96-97 began to be excavated to floor level this afternoon (note: L/97's westernmost 20 cm or so had been left unexcavated). There was no pottery from this digging, but several pieces of worn tile and a possible fang or hair fragment were found. Any rocks or tiles uncovered in this
and will be left in place until any relationship with other such formations throughout the east portion of the trench can be distinguished.
The stump, formerly in H/91-92, continued to be cleaned. One piece of bronze, several pieces of pan tile, and no pottery pieces were recovered. Despite the fact that the stump is now upside down, all depth measurements for finds in the stump will be measured from its (original) top.
