A.M.
Began this morning with a pick pass through the first meter of the western sector of the trench in an attempt to even out the current surface of locus 2. One special find was made.
Special Find #1
Piece of medieval pottery
Locus 2
138.67 E / 35.85 S
28.35m A.E. By mid-morning we reached locus 3, as soil was becoming clumpier and much more clay-like.
Locus 3 Opening Elevations
136 E / 34 S (NW) = 28.48 m A.E.
136 E / 36 S (SW) = 28.46 m A.E.
141.26 E / 36 S (SE) = 28.31 m A.E.
139 E / 34.5 S (NE) = 28.42 m A.E.
1/3 bowl of terracotta was recovered this morning from locus 2, and three pieces of pottery.
P.M.
The large stump in the center of the trench was removed, enabling a more efficient pick pass through the west trench. After lunch our entire trench was officially divided and became two separate trenches: SF-4 to the west and SF-5 to the east. Caitlin Marshall will be taking over SF-5, and we will resume work in SF-4, both trenches measuring 2 m x 3 m.
A second complete pass was made across Locus 3 in an attempt to even out the surface. The soil is remaining a light/medium brown, somewhat dense but easy to collect. Two additional finds were made this afternoon, two pieces of bronze slag, both found in the southwest corner. Baulk wall trim closed the afternoon, as they represent the most important aspect of this trench, because any changes in stratigraphy may lead to a clearer understanding of the architectural layout of the Tripartite building.
