DAILY LOG ENTRY FOR MONDAY, 6 JULY 2009

MORNING:

Trimmed baulk walls. Finished trimming northern baulk, which was unfinished on Friday. Completed pick pass in northern half of trench. First pick pass through northern half of T-56 revealed terracotta, pottery, some very small pieces of bone, and a very tiny fleck of bronze (ca 4-6 mm across). The soil feels harder, but that is most likely the result of having been baked by the sun over the weekend. Locus 5 is still present, but it seems to be shrinking. There are also still a few organic inclusions such as roots & larvae. A piece of bronze, which is probably an earring (Find #1) was also recovered. Some of the terracotta was extremely friable. Another pickpass was made in the NE quarter of the trench in an effort to level the floor of the northern half of the trench. The soil may be getting lighter in color, but it is hard to tell since so much of the soil is still baked from the sun. Recovered finds were similar to the first pick pass and include terracotta, plaster, ceramic, with more roots.

Afternoon:

Leveled floor of trench w/ a pick & mini-pick. Finds included more terracotta, plaster, ceramic, & roots, with a few pieces of bone. There is still a stark difference in color & texture between the soil of Locus 5 & 4 , w/ 4 being darker and more clayey & 5 being a yellowish-olive color w/ a more sandy texture and look.

Locus 4 also seems to have more finds in it. After leveling the trench one more pickpass was made. The soil in Locus 4 seems to be getting lighter, and is in-between an extremely dark olive and a grayish color. There is more terracotta, but much of it is extremely friable and fragile, and does not break but disintegrates when either picked or broken in a dirt clod. Two larger tiles have also appeared, but are not entirely uncovered. One is in the NE corner & is extremely fragile. The other tile is closer to the northern half of the trench and is rather more solid. Ceramic, bone, & a very small fragment of shell were recovered.
