Boxes of pottery 2

Boxes of tile 3

Tues. June 22

An exploratory trench 8 m long,C-J and 2 m wide, 17-18 was cut in an attempt to uncover a lower building foundation wall paralleling the southern border of Rect. 5 (see Mon. June 21, p. 16, second paragraph ). One "cassatta" of tile fragments were found along with one "strawberry" box of coarse pottery rims and pieces. The rock packing in this trench is indistinct in shape and occurs at different depths. Stamped roccheto found in F-17.

A second trench 5 m long, D-H and 1 m wide, 15 was cleared in a similar attempt to uncover a lower building foundation wall running east to west. Section G-H/15 revealed an indistinct stone packing which appears to run east to west. This packing is approx. 1 m north of the southern boundary wall of Rect. 5. The excavated swath north of this rock packing revealed an impasto rectangular loom weight in section F-15 and a

double "tubed" bucchero handle, also found in F-15.

The removal of a small square of dirt in area E-13 revealed a piece of statue, possible horse leg fragment.

A small cut 2 m wide, I-J and 1 m long, 10 revealed a small tile fall close to the surface and near the southern boundary foundation wall of Rect. 5. A small terracotta spindle whorl was also found.
