August 9, Friday

T1 AM The trench T1 AM was cleaned. Stones appeared north of the supposed end of the wall, and east of it, but at a lower level, and with no connection. One waterspout head ( 19680637

T1 AK The layer of small stones and tiles in trench T1 AK, grid KL 1-2 was lifted. It produced tiles (5 boxes), fragments of big, plain vases, and part of a ridgepole

tile with one small paw attached to it. Some of the material was very badly fired and crumbled. The edge of the trench shows that this layer continues further towards the east.

T1 AN A new trench was laid out in order to follow the wall running through trench T S1, T1 AK, and T1 AL. It measured 3x4m. Excavating was started at the northern end, and a strip, ca. 1.40m wide was left between the trench T1 AL and this trench (see plan ). The reason for this was to trace remains of a clay wall, which appeared in the profile of trench T1 AL, extending across the wall to an estimated height of max. 0.25m. The topsoil was taken off, and

produced 1 box of tiles and some pottery. The second and third layer produced 5 boxes of tiles, plaster and pithoi fragments, + 1 box of five pottery with stems and feel preserved. 1 mud (clay) brick was found. All this material was found in the western and eastern end of the trench, leaving a strip ca 1.20m of greyish-yellowish earth. At ca 50cm stones appeared under this strip and formed a divet continuation of the wall. The wall seemed to run through the length of the trench. For measurements see plan p. 237 .
