Morning:
The topsoil cut in MN 83 was completed. The soil throughout the cut was deep, brown, and rooty. Little tile or pottery was discovered. A second cut to bring the level to 50 cm in depth uncovered what may be a tile fall. A concentration of tile running east-west in a line in alpha beta 81 at a depth of 20 cm to the east and 50 cm to the west. This level is much higher than that of the MN 77-82 tile and rock fill area. About 1/4 cassetta of tile and plaster in small pieces was recovered. Two boxes of pottery included mostly coarseware and a few sherds of fineware and bucchero. The soil remained brown at this depth.
The tile concentration in alpha beta 59-61 continued to be lifted and set aside to look for joins, sima frags, etc. The area directly to the column base in alpha beta 60-61 included many tiles showing evidence of burning and virtrification. About one half box of pottery came from this area as did the same amount of small slag pieces. Very little carbon was found. There appeared to be either a plaster layer or floor underneath. The floor around this tile cocnetration appeared quite well preserved but underneath it and just around the edges was increasingly uneven and hard to discern. Moving west into meter 60 several pieces of burnt pottery were also recovered.
In XY 71 the unfired cover tiles protruding from the baulk continued
to be uncovered. Heavy burning was evident on three of these tiles with a heavy brown burn layer over this part. Pottery recovered from this burn area was also burnt. However it was not visible whether this burn area includes more of these tiles. There were a few small plaster chunks found in the soil above the tiles but none yet directly on top of them. The center burned tile showed a sandal print in XY 71.
In O 74-76 several more large pantile fragments were uncovered lying just above the burn layer. One of these preserved a complete lenth of 78 1/2 cm but this uncluded two fractures across the middle. The total width was still not evident. A large piece of plaster with two finished edges and reed impressions on the third side came from the plaster layer above these tiles: 70-90 cm in depth. Most of one and one half cassete of plaster came from this level. Abouy half of these were reserved having a finished edge.
Excavation continued in S 60-61 for photographing and drawing. An incissed bucchero handle fragment and an Athena head, both part of a Potnia Theron - type handle were uncovered. It now appears that the stratigraphy in this particular area follows this pattern -
a) brown soil
b) brown clay-like soil
c) red burn and plaster area
1) fineware pottery
2) tile and plaster
d) heavy burn layer
There is a large stump in TU 60 that has a large amount of soil still unexcavated. The soild on this stump shows a similar red area at about the same level as the cut in S 60. Again pithos fragments were recovered. Some of the pottery was burned but most was not. Some slag and burned and vitrified tile was recovered.
Photographs were taken.
A topsoil cut was made in Y2 57-58. The soil was dark brown and rooty with small stones. About three quarters of a cassetta of small tile and a few plaster chunks were collected.

Afternoon -
The stump in TU-60 was lifted and the soil on and around it has begun to be excavated. Very little pottery and some small pieces of terracotta and tile were recovered. Also some slag was found high above the burn layer. A section was drawn showing the stratigraphy mentioned in this morning's account. Photographs were taken of this area. The burn layer was swept down for the drawing and photographing and appeared very solid, almost like floor.
