Daily Log

June 27, 1972

Work was begun on Tesoro Rectangle 18, the area defined by the east and south walls of the upper building and the north and west walls of the room in the south-east corner of the upper building.

The grid delineation is as follows: The north-east corner of the room is the starting point.  Running from north to south along the eastern wall, the grid is designated alphabetically A-J.  Running from east to west, the grid is designated numerically 1-6.  The room is thus divided into one meter squares ( ).

Excavation was begun in a 2 by 3 m trench running north to south.  This trench includes the area designated as 4D-F and 3D-F.  At first, a layer about 10 cm deep was removed.  The ground was found to be stony with occasional pieces of weathered tile and weathered rough pottery.

After this first layer of stony ground was removed, another 30 cm of mixed earth and stone was excavated.  At this point, a layer of brown earth with virtually no stones was encountered.  This layer was c. 40 cm from the existing ground surface and sloped slightly downards to the south.  This layer was then excavated for a depth of c. 20 cm.  Several deposits of carbon and burned tile, as well as a few small deposits of yellowish earth, were noticed within the brown earth strata.  Pottery and tile fragments were much more numerous in this layer.

At about 55 cm from the existing groundline, several large stones were found.  They were left in place until more could be discerned about them.
