In sector E-F 5-6 heavy layer of yellow earth occurred at a depth c. 0.90m -- the earth was very homogeneous in texture, soft, and contained no pottery of architect. terra cotta -- above this strata was a layer of dark brown earth c. 20cm thick which contained many small pieces carbonized wood -- also archit. terra cotta and pottery and some small pieces bronze -- some of the pottery contained carbonized material on inside -- above the darker layer was layer lighter brown extending to the surface. This layer contained light stones and terra cotta as well as some pottery and tiny pices of bronze [see profile p. 74 ].
In sector G-H 6-7 trench revealed different stratification than that mentioned above -- no layer of yeallow earth was observed! The dark brown earth-stone mixture at surface continued to depth c. 1.35m. Large pithos fragments [ 19710067
] and heavy concentrations of tiles occurred at depth c. 1.10-1.35m. 19710067 19710067 19710067- No find number
- G-H 6-7
- c. 1.10-1.35m
- Large pithos fragments
The work on this sector will be extended S. to sector E-F7 in order to determine the extent of the yellow layer in E-F 5-6 [see profile
]. This area also produced heavy concentration of bucchero in earth containing many small
pieces carbonized matter.
At depth c. 1.20m H-7 heavy concentration of tiles mentioned above -- below htis appeared fraagments of large pithos -- below the pithos was an area of soft dark earth with very heavy concentraiton of carbon matter -- bounded on north side by tightly packed small stones [see diagram
]14. At depth c 1.25m H-7 in the carbon layer next to the above piece -- fragment of bucchero with impressed indentation on side of cup -- from other fragments found in sector A-J 4-7 the pot was able to be reconstructed.
- Find #14
- H-7
- c. 1.25m
- fragment of bucchero with impressed indentations on side of cup
15. In clearing area previously excavated [see
p. ] a small piece of bucchero appeared apparently washed out during the winter -- also fragment of pottery.- Find #15
