Morning
We work in AG-11, completing cut 4 in the fossa and cleaning the walls of the interiors of the fortification; and in R22 extending the rock cut to the top of the rock packing and beyond in the north; and stripping the rocks in A2 to expose a wall face within the packing.
In the fossa cut 4 makes the trench 90cm deep in the southeast, 100cm in the west. The yellow of yesterday gives way to a yellowish tan clay, which contains nothing save a handful of sherds and as much tile as well as a few bone fragments. In the east wall we see the following strata beginning with topsoil of sorts the rock packing along the top and a tan grey layer down to 70cm from the top in the N-E corner; to 85 a pink/white layer petering out halfway across where it turns grey brown briefly then bends down as a (15cm) thick layer of white clayey matter flecked with yellow-orange; to 1m, a tan grey earth like that separating the pink and the while with much carbon- which yielded yesterday's plethora - and to the floor (ca. 125cm) today's nearly sterile dirt. The last could be the surface of the fossa, but this would be shallow and nearly flat. In R22, the fine powdery soil with little indication of burning yields several bronze fragments (#'s 1, 2, 6, 8), and piece of worked bone (# 9) and much pottery (ca. 8 cartons) some painted (#'s 3, 4) and much more tile than the south zone; also much bone - some large. Our foray in A2 yields no clear wall but the ring # 10; that in AG-11 a frieze fragment # 7.
