22 July 2016

The morning began with a pickpass in Locus 4 in order to lower the higher elevation of Locus 4 . The soil was a hard decaying green and yellow rock. No material was found. An additional pickpass was done, also without material. Due to the soil becoming more clay like it was decided to open Locus 10 under Locus 2 . The trench was swept and photos were taken.

Locus 10 opening elevations:

NE 304.63 ma sl

SE 304.69 ma sl

SW 304.70 ma sl

Locus 10 is abutting Locus 5 , Locus 7 , and VT 14 . Locus 10 is a very dense brown clay, with inclusions of carbons, grainy white inclusions, and pottery (mostly impasto with some fine impasto and coarseware), tile. Locus 11 was also opened over the entirety of the sounding. Locus 11 is a dense sandy brown soil and clay mixture, equal to Locus 7 . Baulk walling was done in the sounding to prepare for photos.

Locus 11 is a densely compacted medium brown sand clay mix with inclusions of small rock, pottery (fine impasto and impasto).

of trench with new opened loci 10 and 11

Two pickpasses were done in Locus 10 in order to attempt to lower the level of the locus and investigate coursing of Locus 5. 2 more pickpasses were done in Locus 4 in order to lower the level of the higher decaying rock. In Locus 10 picking using a large hand pick and sorting by hand into buckets. As additional pickpass was done in Locus 4 and the locus was leveled to the level of Locus 8 and baulk walling was done. An additional pickpass was done in locus 10 working east. Pottery continues to be found along with tile. In Locus 4 picking has continued in order to level and baulk wall. In Locus 11 in the sounding picking has continued. In the northern extent of Locus 11 2 pantiles were found both laying horizontal and sloping south. A piece of plaster and the pieces of pottery have been found around them. In Locus 10 a pickpass was done in the remaining 50 cm, making a complete pickpass over the entirety of Locus 10 . Excavation was then paused in order to lower the corresponding level in the north of VT 14 . Picking continues in Locus 11 working south. Small amounts of pottery and tile continue to be found and the soil remains

a clay and decaying rock mix. Two stones on top of each other have been found in the center of Locus 11 , though appears to be floating. Excavation began in Locus 4 in the area between the rock feature running north south and the sounding. In the pickpass that was done the soil is the north is a decaying rock, in the south of Locus 4 a packing of pottery and tile has been revealed in the west and is being defined with handpicks and trowels. In the pickpass pottery, tile, and small rocks continue to be found.

Locus 12 was opened in the north of the trench, running 50 cm north to south and 260c m east to west. It consists of decaying rock, yellowish green in color. It appears to be bedrock. It touches loci 6 , 13 , and 14 . Locus 13 was opened and consists of a tile packing. The tile packing includes what appears to be roofing tile and pottery. It touches loci 11 , 12 ,

14 , and 7 . Locus 14 is a linear feature running north to south. It measures about 1 m east to west and 1.32 m north to south. The sizes of the rocks range from small to large. This locus touches loci 5 , 6 , 7 , 12 , and 13 .
