DAILY LOG ENTRY FOR TUESDAY, 21 JULY 2009

MORNING:

Picked floor of entire trench in 3 passes, starting in the north & working towards the south. The soil in the north is remaining consistent with Locus 7 in the NE corner remaining more yellow in color & less clayey than the rest of trench in texture. It also contains much fewer finds, although a few small (3-4 cm) pieces of terracotta were recovered. Locus 11 remains the same in the northern & middle thirds of the trench, but the southernmost meter it appears to possibly changing, becoming more yellow in color. Some of the rocks near the E baulk were removed when the southernmost meter of the trench was picked, and they stood on top of the leaves from the backfill, which seems to be present in the E baulk. Finds in Locus 11 included terracotta (nearly 1 bowl-full once the floor had been picked), ceramic, & a piece of bone. The first pick pass in the N produced a small piece of slipped cream-ware ceramic (Find #1) & the second pick pass in the middle produced a fragment of the Archaic sima cavetto. (Find #2).

The floor was picked again in 3 passes, moving from the north to the

south. The soil in each area has remained consistent w/ that from the previous pick pass. Locus 7 is still more yellow & less clay-like, & Locus 11 is mostly a yellowish brown olive color. Several large fragments of coarseware were recovered it is possible that there is a higher concentration of finds. A piece of modern foil from the E baulk and a bottle of nail polish from the S baulk were recovered from the southern half of Locus 11 , which indicates that there is still backfill in the south baulks, but no modern finds have come from the floor, which might slope towards the SW corner, in which case, that part of the trench might still be backfill. A piece of black slip (Find #3) was recovered from the pick pass in the southernmost meter.

AFTERNOON:

Finished sorting dirt from last pick pass in the southernmost meter of the trench. The soil in the south seems to be getting a little lighter in color (more yellowish than the rest of the trench). There are also a lot of little (1-2 cm or less) rocks in the SW corner of the trench. A small piece of unusual ceramic (Find #5) was recovered in addition to terracotta, ceramic & small (5-8 cm long) rocks.

Started a third pick pass through the entire floor of the trench, divided into three pick pass through the north, middle, & south meters of the trench. Locus 7 in the NW corner is still more yellow & less clayey & Locus 11 is a yellowish brown olive colored clay. Small chunks of charcoal have been found through the whole trench except for Locus 7 . Finds include terracotta & ceramic & rocks of varying size. Picking in the middle meter of Locus 11

has revealed some rocks in the middle. The have not been pulled up or uncovered, but the pick did bounce off of them. A very small piece of slipped rim (Find #6) was recovered from the pick pass in the middle of Locus 11 , & a slipped base or rim (Find #7) was recovered from the southernmost meter of the trench.
