Daily Log Entry for Friday, 13 July 2007
FRIDAY, 13 JULY 2007
AM
We trimmed the baulk walls in the SW corner, on the east boundary, the north boundary, and on the south and east boundaries of the roped-off stone feature. While trimming the baulk walls in the north-east corner, we found a piece of the procession frieze plaque (Find #1). We also found an iron nail in the E wall (Find #2). After the walls were trimmed we declared Locus 5 and Locus 6. Locus 5 consists of the light brown chaulky, almost-sterile soil in the NW corner (east of the roped-off area). Locus 6 is the extremely dark, almost black, hard-packed & mottled soil in the NE corner of the trench. Locus 6 contains orange, black, and white inclusions and terracotta, bone, plaster, and pottery. Roots are still present throughout the trench. After we took photos, we took points & elevations for Locus 5 & 6. Then we picked in the northern section of the trench, which unearthed ceramic, terracotta, and bone. A small spread of tiles was unearthed just to the north of the center of the trench. We found
2 fragments of unusual ceramic handles (Finds #3 & 4). At the same time we also picked in the southern section, where we found iron slag and a sima cavetto (Finds 5 & 6); then a piece of bronze was found in the NE corner. The soil in the middle, south, & west sections continues to be olive-brown and mottled.

After lunch we examined the soil in the trench. After baking in the sun, the soil in Locus 6 has a very ashy appearance. Locus 6 appears to be the Orientalizing burn layer and the rocks in the NE corner seem to be bedrock. This makes sense since other layers, especially the archaic tile spread, seem to slope downward from the NE corner. If the black soil in the NE is the orientalizing burn layer, then it should be present a centimeters down in the rest of the trench, except for the area

in Locus 5, which is different. Pick passes were made in the middle, southern, & western sections to try to find the rest of the black soil present in the NE. We picked first in the middle section, where we found a piece of Italo-Corinthian pottery (Find #6). Then we picked the southern & western sections, where we found a loom-weight fragment (Find #10). A large fragment of what appears to be pan tile was uncovered when we picked in the middle section, there seems to be other tiles and it might be the begining of a tile spread. While we defined the deeper extent of the tile, small chunks of black soil were extracted. Except for those small chunks, the soil in the sections south of the northern meter continue to remain hardpacked, medium brown, & mottled.
