Pottery 1/2
Work continued in GG- 9 with dental picks, beginning at approximately 40 cm. While working around the stones in this area an ivory half cylinder was exposed. The significant details should be noted: This ivory fragment lay at a depth of ~40cm and lay on its side with its flat surface facing north and its length pointing ~east-west. It lies ~2cm from a stone which in turn lies near other stones at approx. the same level. Moreover, there are stones exposed at a lower level, and tiles found at the level of the ivory, above and below it. Presently, we cannot see any other pieces adjacent to this half cylinder and it appears to be an isolated piece. Also of significance is the fact that carbonized wood fragments were not uncovered in the immediate area surrounding the ivory. This piece lies in GG-9 with the following coordinates: 65cm from the north edge of GG-9, 51cm from the east edge of GG-9. This ivory is today's find number 1.
It should be noted that a small ivory fragment (find number 5) was found in reddish soil adjacent to a fragment of bronze and carbonized wood. The wood fragment was very thin and showed no sign of being worked. Immediately beneath the wood was a clay-shale type soil. The coordinates of find number 5 are 27cm from north edge to south, 65cm from east edge to the west.

Addendum
Find number nine was found at ~40cm. Its flat surface was lying facing towards the north, almost in an identical position to that of find number one. Its length layin an east-west direction but at an angle of ~20 degrees from the trench east-west axis. (See diagram next page)
The worked nail hole was towards the eastern side of the meter. This ivory lay at the following coordinates: 44cm to south from meter's northern edge, 20cm to west from meter's eastern edge.
Again it is significant to note that there was no evidence of carbonize wood in the area immediately surrounding the ivory, and that this piece lay at a level which is in the midst of tiles. At present, it appears to be an isolated piece.
The fact that these two pieces whic are nearly identical inlays (or moldings) were found in almost identical configurations with respect to the meter appears therefore to be coincidence. It is difficult to make a case that they were inlayed on a wooden object together when tehre is no evidence of carbonized wood and a porition of rock lies between them (It should be noted that these pieces are ~35cm apart). However, in order to gather more data
concerning the spatial configuration of these ivories, and others, work will continue with dental tools and occasionally with mestiline in meter GG-9.
Note that all measurements referred to in ithis meter have been made by running twine from the picetti between meters 9 and 10, and between the picettie at FF-GG on either side of the trench.

Bronze pieces which have been cleaned and have been determined to be insignificant are being stored together in a bronze "slag bab" for the entire T23-1980 extension.
Meter GG-9 was excavated with mestaline and dental picks at a slow rate. Work slowed to just dental picks when an ivory fragment was uncovered. It should be noted that a good deal of plaster and carbonized wood was excavated.
Addendum
It should be noted that find number 2 this afternoon was found adjacent to yellow plaster which was resting upon a tile. Moreover there was a burn area ~2cm from the bronze.
