Description | Locus 5 encompassed the entire trench, including the original trench and the northern extension. Locus 5 thus was overlaid by both loci 2 and 4, which covered the original trench and the northern extension, respectively; Loci 2 and 4 were determined to be the topsoil underneath a modern dirt dump. Locus 5 was opened to consolidate Loci 2 and 4. The soil was dark brown and claylike with some pockets of carbon and stoney inclusions ranging from pebble to palm-sized. The opening surface of the locus was relatively flat, with a slight downward slope from north to south. This locus was highly productive in terms of pottery sherds in relation to the previous loci; in contrast to previous loci, smaller quantities of tile were found. Notable finds include a possible crucible fragment, a bone fragment with possible butcher mark, and two sherds of bucchero, one ridged and one incised. Although Locus 5 was opened in order to consolidate Loci 2 and 4, all materials recovered from the locus were ancient in date, indicating that this may have been a contextually secure stratum. |
