Definition | Stylobate. |
Description | The Temple Stylobate forms the north boundary of Trench 23. Chiefly uncovered during the 1993 season, it consists of rectangular, sandstone blocks, reasonably well preserved. Within Trench 23, there is a small anomaly along the south edge of the Stylobate it appears that three of the original blocks (with a total east-west width of 1.33 m) were cut into approximately 0.30 m south to north, to a depth of 0.20 m. The cutting is not completely regular while the west corner is a 90o angle, the east is obliquely cut. Nothing was found within this space, so the purpose of this cutting remains a mystery. Perhaps it is contemporary with the later cuttings made into the east and west faces of the Stylobate column bases, which presumably held a screening wall between the columns. |
