Description |
Locus 42 was defined by the presence of a linear stone feature. This linear stone feature comprised the southern wall of a small, rectilinear hut that was built atop the remains of EPOC4, following its abandonment and destruction; this wall had been left in situ in prior excavation seasons, to serve as a control, but this year was removed to more fully reveal the floor surface of EPOC4. Locus 42 consisted both of the stones that formed the southern wall of the small, rectilinear hut and of the soil that held these stones in place. The stones all were comprised of limestone and were medium-sized, measuring approximately 30cm in maximum preserved dimension. The soil holding these stones in place was olive brown, claylike, and loose in compaction. Excavation proceeded as follows: the stones of the southern hut wall were lifted and removed, then soil was excavated using hand picks and trowels. Soil was hand-sorted in the trench then passed through 1cm and 2mm gauge sieves. Fairly little material culture was recovered from Locus 42; only 44 ceramic sherds, 9 bone fragments, and 65 fragments of tile and plaster were found in this locus. Locus 42 underlaid Locus 41 and overlaid Locus 43. It is the same as Locus 16, excavated in 2018, when a small segment of stones were removed to complete a section cut to the east of Locus 42. Locus 42 also is equivalent to Loci 2, 3, and 16, excavated in 2017 and 2018. |
